This was a case of it all working out in the end, despite some stressful moments. Caterham couldn't give timed delivery, I get that. Despite asking for a morning delivery and a text first thing with an ETA, even after worried phone calls to the showroom mid-morning, it then took a further hour to get the driver to phone, by which point he was still almost an hour away. So glad I hadn't got any client work booked in for the day.
So, it was a lunchtime delivery. For a small car it comes in a lot of boxes. And those boxes take up a lot of space. I had previously considered the garage to be generous in size. I am now glad I didn't end up with a 'normal size' one. That would have been a big problem.
The boxes were duly stacked at the back of the garage, and then came the problem of the chassis. This was on a trolley that Caterham wanted back, and in typical Lotus style, the chassis was quite fragile but only as heavy as it needed to be (driver said "very heavy", but failed to account for the powerlifter we had on the team). I swear that the driver positioned us at the back so that we couldn't see how close to dropping it he came whilst using one hand to pull the trolley and lift the chassis with the other.
The bad news at this point was that the engine and wheels were still on the truck, so all plans of having the chassis at the front and the bits at the back went out of the window, and got stacked wherever there was space.
That done, the van departed and your heroes went off in search of lunch.
Looking for an easy place to start and hoping to reduce the volume of cardboard, three of the boxes labelled "tools" seemed like the obvious choice. This turned out to be a reasonable plan as each of the Caterham boxes contained individually-wrapped tools (i.e. in boxes) and a fair amount of fresh air sealed in plastic (packaging to stop things moving around). Probably the most impressive find was the socket set, which is satisfyingly shiny.
Also part of this set were some axle stands and a jack, both of which I already had. These were passed on via Gumtree a few days later.
